    Description

Carte-de-visite photograph of a young woman wearing cross country skis, by H. Ingeborg of Christiana, Norway, dated 1892. There is writing on the back, perhaps with the name, as well as Christiana and 1892. The full standing portrait view shows a young woman dressed in winter clothes and wearing cross country skies posing for her likeness in a photographic studio. She wears a dark colored heavy coat over a matching heavy weight skirt and has a hat on her head. She also wears woolen gloves and holds a long single pole. The image is a bit faint at the bottom, but I do think that the left ski is shorter than the right one. The boot on her left foot seems to have some extra fur on the front too. In its earlier forms, cross country skiing had one ski (andor) shorter than the other and one pole instead of two. This photograph came from a collection assembled by Captain Holger Berg, originally from Denmark, who settled in New York City in the last decade of the 19
    th
century. The CDV is in good condition with only light wear and soiling. The photograph exhibits only good tonal range, a little light throughout, and shows only good detail. Very nice early Norwegian cross country skiing image!
