A rare and original, "1870-1880 Two (2) CDV's (Carte De Visite) Photos of Cute Babies Propped in Pillows."
Photo #1
is an outstanding, period photograph, showing a sweet baby propped in a padded, upholstered chair, with a nice blanket. It's difficult to tell what he or she was wearing, although the child's hair is parted down the middle, which was typical for little boys at the time. The photo measures approx. 2 1/4" X 3-1/2" (5.8 cm. X 9 cm. ) and is mounted on its original Card Mount, which measures approx. 4-1/8" X 2-1/2" (10.3 cm X 6.3 cm.)
The photographer was Napoleon Sarony, who had a photography studio in New York City, NY in the early 1870's. The business was listed in the Goulding's Business Directory of New York during that time. This fascinating "CDV Photo with cute baby" is in excellent condition and there are no perceivable flaws. Please see all photos above to confirm the condition of this photo.
Photo #2
is a fascinating 1880's CDV (Carte De Visite) Photo of a Cute Baby in Chair, from Nieder-Ingelheim, Germany." This lovely CDV photograph shows a sweet baby propped in a padded, upholstered chair, with a pillow. He or she is wearing a typical baby gown. Before the days of snaps and one-piece baby creepers, baby's traditionally wore gowns. It made changing them much easier.
The photographer was Emil Strieder, who had a photography studio in Nieder-Ingelheim, Germany, which is on the Rhine River. Charlemagne had built the Ingelheim Imperial Palace there in around 800 AD. So it was a hopping place with lots of industry and people who wanted photographs made of their children in the 1880's. We found one reference to Herr Emil Strieder in 1885, in a document about a 120 year celebration of a club in the area. We suspect that this photo was brought with emigrants, who came to the USA in a wave in the 1880-1900's.
This CDV Photo from German is in excellent condition, with only minor flaws … one chip at the bottom edge in front, and two small surface indents in back. The photo is a tad faded, but still clear. The baby's features are clear with good contrast.
Please see all of photos of both babies above, to confirm the condition and contents of the photos.
